Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter and congratulations on your desire to become a better photographer.

If you love photography like we do, you know how frustrating it is struggling to get the image you see in your mind to be the image you ultimately see on paper.

Are you ready to start taking photos you can be proud of?  Think you need expensive studio lighting to get fantastic results?

Would you be surprised to know both photos were taken with Canon 580 X eTTL flashes?

This first photo was taken with the Canon 580 flash on the camera.

The second photo is the AFTER shot taken with three Canon 580 flashes,  properly positioned and metered.

Unfortunately, the first BEFORE photo is one too many photographers take and settle for.

It only goes to show you that you don’t need the bulky studio lights.  What you need is someone to show you how to use the equipment you already have.

And, that’s just what you get when you subscribe to StudioStyles’ photography training center.

In this video tutorial, your mentor, Mike Luter, will show you how in 15 minutes you can get professional grade photos using the Canon 580 flashes.

He starts building his lighting set-up with the main light, goes to the background light and then shows you how to add the hair/edge light to create a beautifully, flattering image.

Here’s a pull back shot of the lighting set-up.

Are you happy with the results you’re getting from your eTTL flash?

When this question was asked to 50 workshop attendees of our local camera club only a small percentage of attendees said that they were. Most struggled to get consistent results.

Do you know what the biggest problem is with eTTL flashes? The answer is you, aka, operator error. This need not be.

The new generation of eTTL flashes are extremely sophisicated and offer reliable, consistent results to those who understand the principles and learn how to use them.

This video training is a an in-depth, 2-hour workshop explaining the how’s and why’s of the portable flash. It goes over the equipment, accessories and the best settings. It shows you the best use of the flash. Have a pen and paper ready because you will be wanting to take some notes.

This video has been posted in the Subscriber Only section of our website. Since we’ve broken this workshop into six parts, you can see the first part for FREE.

Studio lighting doesn’t have to be complicated to get great results.  This is a simple 1 light set-up using a Bogen MonoSpot aimed directly at her.

Check out the pull-back shot below to see my exact lighting set-up.

I was sitting on the stool in the bottom left of the frame.  I started right next to the light and then rolled around getting different angles.  I liked this one the best.

Posing Basics: Head Positions

May 19, 2009 by Lee Hughes

In this section we will take a look at proper head positioning. The two basic head positions are the masculine and feminine head positions.

Masculine Pose

The masculine head position is accomplished by turning subjects head toward either shoulder, tilting top of the head away from the lead shoulder. This position can work for both male and female subjects.

Feminine Pose

The feminine head pose is shown in images below. This is accomplished by tipping the head towards the lead shoulder. This pose works well on females. Although some males may fall into this poses when sitting in front of the camera, it looks very awkward and I would not recommend shooting it.
